On Thursday 19 March, Swansea University and Cardiff University will host an innovative conference focusing on nurturing the next generation of Welsh Sport reporters. This is the first time that the Women's Sports Communication event has been held, with the aim of enriching the communication skills of students who wish to pursue a career in the field.
Some of the industry's most experienced reporters and experts will contribute, including Gabriella Jukes and Dylan Ebenezer. Sioned Dafydd will also share her personal journey of studying Media through the medium of Welsh before developing a successful career as a Sports Reporter. With the 2026 Commonwealth Games being held in Glasgow this year, members of Team Wales will be present to share their experiences and discuss current topics in the world of Sport today.
Sioned Dafydd said:
"From my personal experience, it is essential for young women to have role models in the world of sports broadcasting.
"This conference is therefore a great way to bring an inspiring community together, and to inspire the next generation of Welsh-medium workers to pursue a career in the industry."
The conference is funded by the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol and organised by Andrew Weeks, a lecturer at Cardiff University's School of Journalism, Media and Culture, and Non Vaughan Williams, a senior lecturer in the Department of Media and Communications, Swansea University.
Andrew said:
"The aim is to provide students with training on practical skills in the fields of media and public relations such as correspondence, commentary and interviewing.
"The conference will also draw students' attention to the importance of the Welsh language in education and in the workplace."
Non added:
"Women's sports communication is a current topic that is attracting a lot of attention in the industry right now.
"This event will be part of a wider effort to strengthen the presence and influence of women in the Welsh language sports media, and to inspire students to take a confident step into the sector."
The event is open to sixth form students interested in a career in Sports Communication or Media, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students studying in the fields through the medium of Welsh.
