Exactly a year after Joe Biden was inaugurated as President of the United States, Welsh journalist Maxine Hughes, who lives and works in Washington, will host the first in a series of online sessions for learners and students interested in pursuing a career or studying journalism.
Maxine is now a familiar name and face to many, not only for her journalistic work, but also for being the official translator for Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney who bought Wrexham football club, and did a lot of the promotional work bilingually.
Maxine said:
"The United States is an exciting and interesting place to be a journalist. One of my priorities is to try and bring the complex and important stories to a Welsh speaking audience. We should be pushing boundaries, and making headlines in Welsh on the foreign stories, as well as at home in Wales. I'm excited to talk about these ideas and really want anyone considering a career in journalism to feel they could ask me anything. I want to support Welsh journalism as much as possible. ”
Mared Jones, Development Officer at the Coleg Cymraeg, said:
"The Coleg is delighted to support such a project, and to show that there are no boundaries in studying, and pursuing a journalistic career through the medium of Welsh, on the contrary, it opens many exciting doors."
The Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol is funding the project and the sessions are jointly organized with Swansea University, Bangor University and Cardiff University. The first session is on Thursday 20 January from 3-4pm. Pupils, learners and students interested inpursuing a career or studyingJournalism are encouraged to register and join the sessions.
