Blog Begw: ‘Volunteering is the best learning experience ever!’

Are you aiming to go to university next year? Why not consider volunteering in your community? Volunteering is a very simple way of adding experiences to your CV/personal statement which are very valuable.

I volunteered with Nantlle Vale FC as a media officer for almost five years, which was indeed the best learning experience ever. I was able to do something I enjoyed while helping my local club and developing my skills, e.g. communication, organising teamwork. These are essential skills in any workplace. It's not just the skills. Volunteering is an opportunity for you to meet other people from different backgrounds. There is no 'time limit' or requirement as every club will appreciate your help. You will also be helping your community, which is a very nice feeling.

Your communities are full of clubs in areas such as sport, music, drama, Young Farmers, who will be eager for your support. You don't need to have been a member of the clubs previously to help. In addition, you don't have to commit on a weekly basis. There are many simple roles available, such as being on the gate on a match day for your local club. You will have the opportunity to chat with and meet new people, leading to you developing your confidence.

Especially when growing up, I realised how valuable these experiences were when negotiating with employers. Employers will appreciate that you have made an effort to help your community and expand your skills.

Nowadays, our clubs predominantly rely on volunteers/committees, and without special people such as these it is not possible to maintain communities.

Don't be afraid, go for it and offer to help!
