The use of Welsh within Sciences

ADD ALT HERE

I'm Gwenllian, and I'm studying for a PhD in Agricultural Sciences at Aberystwyth University and want to present my thesis in Welsh.

Making a connection between the Welsh language and sciences is often an unfamiliar concept, but my experience has been contrary to this. I was encouraged to study through the medium of Welsh during my undergraduate degree despite not having previously studied sciences in Welsh.

Initially, it was difficult to think about discussing scientific concepts, let alone presenting academic work, in Welsh. But with the help of the lecturers, I felt more confident than ever in doing these things in my first language. Suddenly, communicating science was easier because I was so comfortable using Welsh. And I am well aware that choosing to study through the medium of Welsh opened the door for me to study for a PhD.

Finding the correct key terms, and especially identifying Welsh-medium resources for reading and revising, is still difficult, but I am now so aware of the support available within the university to help me.

Choosing to use Welsh in the field of Biology has opened my eyes to the range of research that takes place here

The Welsh language is at the heart of interesting research, with Welsh words appearing within several exciting discoveries! A species of anaerobic fungus found within buffalo droppings was named Buchfawromyces eastonii! As well as Myxococcus llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndroblllllantysiliogogogochensis, which is a species of myxobacteria that lives in the soil around the area. It is said to have the longest name according to binomial nomenclature!

The support available to study sciences in Welsh is increasing. Cymdeithas Edward Llwyd is a perfect example of promoting engagement and knowledge within environmental sciences through the medium of Welsh.

The Welsh language meshes perfectly as a basis for good quality academic work and research. With our scientists already leading the way, who knows what the Welsh scientists of the future will achieve with further encouragement!
