Blog Rebecca - Staying in Wales to go to University

ADD ALT HERE

There are so many reasons why staying in Wales to go to University could be right for you.

Such as here in Aberystwyth. Although it is possible to study a variety of subjects, such as Law or Agriculture, partially or entirely in Welsh, life outside the 'lecture rooms' – the fun side, you could say – provides an equal number of opportunities to be a Welsh-speaking student.

UMCA – Undeb Myfyrwyr Cymraeg Aberystwyth/Aberystwyth Welsh Students’ Union – fills your calendar with events (seriously, you get a calendar at the beginning of the year). Every month, the Sŵn evening is held, where a specific theme allows everyone to dress up, socialise and enjoy Welsh-language music. You then have milestones in your social schedule, such as the Intercollegiate Dance (y Ddawns Ryng-golegol), where all the Welsh Students' Unions across Wales meet to dance, socialise, make new friends...

You have Neuadd Pantycelyn, which is a hall of residence full of Welsh-speaking students of all ages, from across the country, who have the same intention as you – to settle into a strange place full of strangers. But the difference is that you all have something in common: you speak Welsh. I'm being honest when I say that you would be surprised how easily you can get used to other people if you share something as basic as a language.

And I'm not only promoting Aberystwyth University here (well, maybe predominantly), because anywhere you decide to study in Wales is going to feel like home. It is equally as important to consider the social life of a student as it is to consider the working life.
