5 Tips to apply for Dentistry
Here are a few things for you to consider before making your application from someone going through the process at present
Work Experience
Arrange adequate work experience in many different environments e.g.
- General practice- with dentists, hygiene dentists, or therapy dentists
- Private practice
- Orthodontics
- Secondary care clinics or dental hospitals
Remember that any work experience is a good experience, and make a note any memorable events to mention in your personal statement or interviews.
Join a Scheme
I learnt a lot about the dental world on the 'SEREN' scheme, familiarising ourselves with 'hot topics' and current events which are great to discuss in an interview. The *TOMORROW'S DENTIST scheme also provides great support for aspiring dentists preparing to apply.
*All participants are eligible for an interview in Cardiff!*
UCAT
The UCAT is tough! I used the Medify website to time my replies but there are a number of great free online resources on their website. Also make sure to enjoy summer! Little and often is the way to succeed and see your score increase.
Personal Statement
- Use your experiences, but more importantly, say what you have learned from them.
- Use the GDC standards to prove that you have the ideal qualities in order to be a good dentist.
Interviews
If you are successful for an interview, congratulations!
- Be yourself.
- Consider reading recent articles to stay up to date on the latest dental news.
- Remember to mention that if you are worried about speaking English, interviewers will understand if English is your second language and they will try their best to help you if you are having trouble translating.
- Cardiff University offers bil-lingual interviews so be sure to apply for one if you are more comfortable in Welsh.
- Smile!
If you weren't successful the first time, don't get discouraged. The application process to do a degree in dentistry is one of the most competitive. You can apply again the following year or research similar careers such as therapy, hygiene or dental nurse.
