Seamus's blog - Students studying in Health

ADD ALT HERE

Hello! I'm Seamus, and I'm currently studying Dietetics at Cardiff Met University.

On the course we learn a lot about diseases and what causes them, how they develop and the role of nutrition in treating and preventing them. We also learn how to improve communication, which is so important when we explain things to patients of any age or background.

Currently my favourite thing about the course is going to the campus’ clinic. It is a great opportunity to be able to learn how everything works in a clinical environment, in a relaxed atmosphere. It is also a good opportunity to talk to patients, professionals, and other students who are on different courses, which helps with my professional and interprofessional development.

The use of the Welsh language is very important in healthcare, we often hear how the language improves the experiences of patients who speak Welsh. It is possible to do some of the modules of the undergraduate course through the medium of Welsh, which is great! Unfortunately, I don’t have the opportunity on the postgraduate course, but there are loads of opportunities to use Welsh, such as in the clinic, on placements, with the Language Skills Certificate or as an ambassador for the Coleg Cymraeg.

I would suggest if anyone wanted to study a health degree to take part in as many activities as possible, it's natural to be nervous, but you don't have to be perfect the first time!
