Blog Dewi - Opportunities for Ambassadors, Bridgend College

ADD ALT HERE

During my time as an ambassador for Bridgend College (Pencoed Campus) I have had many different types of interactions. I have had people from different classes coming up to me and asking what a specific word is in Welsh, and I'm happy to see how many people are now learning about the language at college.

Whilst working with Coleg Cymraeg, we help to get the word out that the Welsh language is not used enough and that it is important to use it. How? Having days for activities such as quizzes, a coffee club and much more, would help encourage people to use Welsh. The ambassador team is great, because everyone knows each other, and is happy to work as a team.

What did I do? I helped with a quiz and also with open days. I worked on a stall that gives information about the opportunities available at the college, and the opportunities available if you speak Welsh. I enjoy the activities we do because they help to promote the opportunities the college offers Welsh speakers, or others who are learning Welsh.

Why? As a team, we try to help keep the Welsh language alive. This is important because the 2021 census states that the Welsh language has decreased in our area. To get the figure back up, we will need to continue celebrating different types of events at college, such as Rights Day, Santes Dwynwen and also Welsh Language Week. During the Freshers' Fairs and the Christmas Fairs, we had hot chocolate stalls and games where people tried to name different words in English and Welsh, and if they were correct, they would win a prize.

I am proud to be an ambassador and enjoy promoting Welsh across our various campuses!
