Hello! I'm Gabi and I'm one of the Coleg's school ambassadors at Ysgol Cwm Rhymni. This is my first blog for the Coleg.
I'm sure everyone has heard a teacher shouting in the corridor: “Welsh is the language of this school, guys!", and has disregarded it. It is easy to forget how important it is to keep the Welsh language alive, and to use it in all aspects of our lives.
That could be by posting a message in Welsh on a social network or giving a speech to a hall full of people! I would like to share 5 advantages of speaking Welsh for your future.
1. Many more job opportunities
Speaking Welsh gives anyone searching for a job in Wales an advantage, as many employers are looking for Welsh-speaking individuals – and not only in Wales, but for international business as well.
2. Cognitive skills
In other words: physical exercise for your brain! Being able to switch between two languages enhances your cognitive skills – bilingual people are more creative and flexible.
3. Meeting new people
As the Welsh language grows daily, you never know where someone will be able to speak Welsh. From speaking with your favourite Welsh celebrity at the Eisteddfod; to Ohio in the United States, where two areas are known as 'Little Cardiganshire’; and of course in Argentina in the Chubut province.
4. Contributing to the continuity of the Welsh language
Experience the pride of being able to speak this ancient language. A language that has existed for almost 1,500 years. Be one of the individuals that keeps it alive.
5. Welsh-medium higher education
We live in an amazing age which allows us to discover new areas within Wales in which to be able to study. Also, through organisations such as the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, we are able to receive scholarships to support our routes into higher education!
