Money in your pocket!

Did you know that funding is available through many of the Coleg Cymraeg scholarships if you study part of your course in Welsh?  

The money isn’t a loan, and you don’t have to repay it!  

There is more information about every scholarship at the bottom of the page.  

Llŷr Roberts Memorial Bursary 2024  

This is a bursary for undergraduate students studying through the medium of Welsh, and is open for any subject. The bursary will sponsor a trip which is linked to the student's studies.

How much: We intend to award up to 4 bursaries each year, worth £500 each. 

Who: undergraduate students studying through the medium of Welsh, and is open for any subject 

Closing date: Midday on 17 June 2024

The Main Scholarship

How much: £1,000 a year for up to 3 years (a total of £3,000)

Who: Students who study at least 66%/80 credits a year of their course in Welsh, and who are starting at University in September 2025.

Application period: 10 September - 24 January

How to apply: The application form is open now. (This form is only available in Welsh. It is also the application form for the Gwilym Prys Davies Scholarship.)

Any applicants who want a Main Scholarship to go to Aberystwyth University or Bangor University will need to sit their entrance exams. Information for how to register for these exams can be found below.

The closing date for both Universities' entrance exam is 31 January.

The Incentive Scholarship 

How much: £500 a year for the length of the course.

Who: Students who will start their University course in Sept/Oct 2024 and are studying at least 33%/40 credits of their course in Welsh in ANY SUBJECT.

Courses: Any course that offers 33% of the course in Welsh. Use our course finder to see if your course is on the list. 

Closing Date:  The application window for the 2024/25 academic year is now closed.

The Medicine Scholarship

How much: £500 a year for the length of the course.

Who: Students who are studying a Medicine course at a university in Wales, and studying at least 33%/40 credits of the course in Welsh. 

Closing date: The application form for September 2025 is now closed.

The 'Defi Fet' Veterinary Scholarship

How much: £500 per year over 5 years (total £2,500)

Who: Veterinary Students at Aberystwyth University and the RVC (Royal Veterinary College). During their time at Aberystwyth University, the students must follow at least 40 credits per year through the Welsh language. The students are also expected to take part in Welsh-medium activities, assist in teaching Welsh to their fellow students, complete written assessments in Welsh and undertake more than 50% of their Animal Husbandry External Studies (AHEMS) on Welsh locations and farms . During their time at the RVC, scholarship holders must undertake more than 50% of their Clinical External Studies (CEMS) in Wales in a Welsh or bilingual Welsh/English environment.

Closing date: The application form for entry in September 2025 is now available on Aberystwyth University's website, with a closing date of 30 April.

The Gareth Pierce Bursary  

In memory of its former Chief Executive, the WJEC has created the Gareth Pierce Bursary to support students who wish to study Maths through the medium of Welsh. Coleg Cymraeg is administering the bursary on behalf of WJEC.    

How much: £3,000 a year for the first year only 

Who: Students who wish to study a Maths course and who wish to study at least 33% of their course in Welsh 

Closing date: The application window for 2024/25 is now closed.

The Cyngor Gwynedd Scholarship

How much: £1,000 a year for up to 3 years (a total of £3,000) 

Who: Students who live in the Gwynedd area who are studying their whole course (100%) in Welsh

How to applyNominations for 2024/25 will be selected from among the applications for the Coleg's Main Scholarship.

The Cyngor Môn Scholarship 

How much: £500 a year for up to 3 years (a total of £1,500) 

Who: Students who live in the Anglesey area, who are studing at least 33%/40 credits a year of their course in Welsh

Closing date: The application form for 2024/25 is now closed.

The Gwilym Prys Davies Scholarship

How much: £1,000 a year for up to 3 years (a total of £3,000) 

Who: Students who are studying Law, who live in the Meirionydd or Rhondda Cynon Taf areas and who are studying at least 66%/80 credits a year of their course in Welsh. Only applicable for courses at Aberystwyth or Bangor universities.

Closing date: Nominations for 2025/26 will be selected from among the applications for the Coleg's Main Scholarship. You will need to fill in the application form in the Main Scholarship section.

The Nursing Scholarship

Sum: £500 a year for 3 years (total of £1500)

Who: Nursing Students that are starting University in Spring 2024, and study at least 33%/40c of their Nursing course in Welsh

Courses: Nursing Courses which offer 33% of the course in Welsh. Use our course finder to see if your course is on the list 

Closing date: The application form is now closed
