I decided to choose the additional module, Eich Gyrfa a’r Gymraeg’, at the University of South Wales for several reasons. I wanted to collaborate with new people, develop my personal confidence, and continue using Welsh after having studied in Welsh-medium schools throughout my education.
Although it was a short module, it was a very valuable experience. It included an introduction to personal skills and SWOT analysis, as well as regular sessions—either online or face-to-face. These sessions provided a great opportunity to practice using Welsh in a different context and to build confidence in communication. Through the reflective element, I had the chance to explore careers that utilise Welsh and to see how my skills and experiences could help me in the future.
One of the most valuable aspects was the opportunities that arose from the module. My confidence has grown significantly, and this has led to the opportunity to represent the Coleg Cymraeg as an ambassador at the university this year. In addition, I received a £250 bursary for completing the module, which was a great bonus.
The experience has also given me a greater sense of pride in the language and culture. Studying alongside students from all over the world, I have noticed just how much interest people have in our language and country. I’ve been encouraged to appreciate the Welsh language even more. I have also started to pay more attention to the little things that make Wales unique. This includes attending football and rugby matches, where language, community, and a sense of national pride come together to create a strong culture.
My message to other students would be to choose Welsh language modules or to study part of your course through the medium of Welsh. You might be surprised by the number of opportunities, experiences, and the level of confidence you can gain from that small step.
