Hello! I'm Rachel, and I've just completed my first year studying Primary Education at Bangor University. Over the past year, I've had the opportunity to learn about a wide range of subjects related to education and child development. The course offers so much, including exciting lectures, featuring guest speakers, workshops, and a variety of experiences that help develop confidence and professional skills. One of the best things about my first year was getting to know other students and being part of the friendly Welsh-speaking community in Bangor.
One of my highlights was my seven-week school placement at a school about 40 minutes from Bangor. Working with the children, teaching classes and small groups, and building relationships with them was a truly special experience. The children were so welcoming, and seeing their progress was incredibly rewarding. I also had the opportunity to observe children of different ages and see the work that goes on behind the scenes in a school, including preparations for the Eisteddfod. In addition, we had a week-long alternative placement where we could choose where to go, and I chose to go home to gain a different experience.
I took part in an intensive Welsh week, an employability week, and weekly lead school days, all of which were great opportunities to develop my skills. We also have opportunities to mix with students on the English-medium course, which helps broaden our experiences and allows us to make new friends. Studying through the medium of Welsh has been very important to me, and it has given me the confidence to use the language in a professional environment. My advice to anyone considering the course is to take advantage of every opportunity available – every experience helps you develop as a teacher.
