Cynwal ap Myrddin from Penrhyn Llŷn winning Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol’s Cyngor Gwynedd Scholarship, worth £3,000

Cynwal ap Myrddin from Llwyndyrys, Pwllheli, is the winner of Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol’s Cyngor Gwynedd Scholarship which is presented to students who choose to study 100% of their degree course through the medium of Welsh and who live in Gwynedd.

Cynwal, who has just passed his A Level exams in History, Welsh and Business Studies from Coleg Meirion Dwyfor, Pwllheli, Llandrillo Menai Group, has been awarded the scholarship to study Welsh at Cardiff University.

Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol’s Cyngor Gwynedd Scholarship was established by Cyngor Gwynedd. It is awarded every year to an individual who has applied for one of Coleg Cymraeg’s main scholarships. The scholarship is worth £1,000 a year (or £3,000 over three years).

“I was very glad to hear that I had been awarded the Cyngor Gwynedd Scholarship,” said Cynwal, who is 18 years old and is a former school ambassador for Coleg Cymraeg.

I’m looking forward to moving to Cardiff to study Welsh at university and get involved with the Welsh community there. The funding will be very helpful, so I’m so grateful to Cyngor Gwynedd and Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol for the scholarship.”

Dr Ioan Matthews, the Chief Executive of Coleg Cymraeg, said: “On behalf of the Coleg, I would like to congratulate Cynwal on being awarded the scholarship this year and we wish him every success in the future studying Welsh at Cardiff University. I would also like to thank Cyngor Gwynedd for its continuous support over the years.”

Councillor Beca Brown, the cabinet member responsible for Education at Cyngor Gwynedd, said:

“Many congratulations to Cynwal ap Myrddin for being awarded Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol’s Cyngor Gwynedd Scholarship and I wish him all the best in his studies in Cardiff. As a Council, we are proud to support students from Gwynedd who are studying and developing their careers through the medium of Welsh and proud of being able to collaborate with Coleg Cymraeg on the vital work of promoting Welsh-medium higher education provision.”

As a leading member of the community in Pen Llŷn, Cynwal works part time at the Language and Heritage Centre in Nant Gwrtheyrn, is a columnist for Eifionydd’s local paper, Y Ffynnon, plays rugby for the Pwllheli team, and is an avid member of Llangybi Young Farmers’ Club. Being awarded the scholarship on behalf of his home county is very important to him. He said:

“Being raised in a Welsh area like Llŷn which has such a thriving culture has been such an inspiration for me in terms of nurturing my interest in the Welsh language and the history of my country. I’m very enthusiastic about expanding my interest and speciality on the course at Cardiff University, with the intention of returning to my area to work in the future.”

The entry details for applications for the Cyngor Sir Gwynedd 2023 scholarship will appear here in October 2022. Coleg Cymraeg’s Course Finder must be used to check which courses are eligible. Contact Coleg Cymraeg by phoning 01267 610400 for more information.
