The Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Professor Geraint H. Jenkins, one of Wales' most distinguished historians, and a staunch supporter of university education through the medium of Welsh.

The Coleg's Chief Executive, Dr Ioan Matthews, said:

"Geraint Jenkins' contribution to academia in Wales has been wide-ranging and multi-faceted, as evidenced by his many publications over the years. But he also placed great importance on encouraging and supporting researchers at the beginning of their careers, and many of us benefited from his encouragement and advice over the years.

"I recently had the privilege of inviting him, on behalf of the Coleg, to be inaugurated as an honorary fellow in March, which he accepted just before Christmas. He leaves a great void in Welsh intellectual life.

"We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends. "

Dr Dylan Phillips, the Coleg’s Director of Higher Education and Secretary to the Board, and Research Fellow at the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies when Geraint Jenkins was Director, added:

"We are saddened to hear of the loss of Geraint, who made such a contribution to academia in the field of Welsh and Welsh history.

"He will be greatly missed by all of us who were fortunate enough to study at his feet or to have worked with him in some capacity, but his influence on Welsh studies will be long lasting.

"Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time."
