The Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol invites applications from undergraduate students for Dr Llŷr Roberts Memorial Bursary.

The bursary is available to undergraduate students studying through the medium of Welsh in any subject in order to support a trip related to their studies.

The bursary was established last year in memory of Dr Llŷr Roberts, one of the Coleg's first associate lecturers who died suddenly in the summer of 2023 at the age of 45.

Six students benefited from the bursary last year.

Three midwifery students from Bangor University travelled to Sri Lanka to gain experience of working in a hospital within a developing country.

Mia Owen said:

"My favourite part was going around the labour ward and introducing myself to all the women and having a chat with them in order to get a bit of their history.

"Being in Sri Lanka was an unforgettable experience in every way.

"I had the opportunity to try new food, meet new people, and learn and see a part of the world I didn't think I'd see. I'm very grateful to have the opportunity to have done this within my degree.

"I would certainly recommend anyone who is interested in applying for this scholarship to go for it."

Another winner was Gwernan Brooks who recently travelled to Patagonia. Gwernan is in her second year studying Welsh at Cardiff University, and felt the opportunity had been "hugely beneficial" for her studies. She said:

"It was special to see so many people taking pride in Welsh culture. As someone who comes from a community where Welsh is spoken naturally, I realised that I can take the language for granted at times. It was very interesting to see Welsh culture intertwined with Argentine culture.

"I had special experiences teaching in the local primary schools and a bilingual secondary school, Coleg Camwy, where Welsh is offered as a subject to study.

"I also learned a lot about language techniques which will be very useful to me as I am interested to go into teaching in the future."

In addition, Megan Broom, who is studying Physical Geography at Aberystwyth University, went to Bergen to study the country's special landforms; and Shayla Virgo, who is studying Law at the University of South Wales, will travel to America next month. She will explore the legal system and improve her understanding of common law principles there.

Speaking about the scholarship, Dr Dafydd Trystan, Registrar of the Coleg said,

"Llŷr was passionate about the Welsh language, about business studies and marketing, about music and about travelling.

"His legacy is clear, and it is fitting that we are offering this bursary to support the next generation of students with their Welsh-medium studies. It is fantastic to see that last year's winners have benefited greatly and so we look forward to receiving more entries this year.

"I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Llŷr’s family for their co-operation and support in establishing the scholarship and to Bangor University where Llŷr lectured.
