Mental health and me: Lily Beau and Coleg ambassadors discuss mental health among Coleg highlights at the Eisteddfod

Looking ahead to the Coleg Cymraeg's events at the Llŷn and Eifionydd National Eisteddfod 2023, the Coleg’s Chief Executive, Dr Ioan Matthews, said:

"The past year has been busy for the Coleg as we further expand Welsh language provision in the further education, apprenticeships and higher education sectors. We are extremely excited to be returning to the festival field in Boduan this year to showcase our students, learners and lecturers at our various events, as well as celebrate the successful collaboration with our partners.

"I would like to encourage everyone – school pupils, further education college learners, students, parents, or friends of the Coleg to pop into our stand during the week. All will be warmly welcomed and a variety of events will be held on a daily basis."

Events will take place between 5 – 12 August in the Coleg Cymraeg stand (units 131-135.) The full programme of events can be found on the Coleg Cymraeg website.

Here are some of the highlights:

FORWARD TOGETHER – WELSH WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT IN EDUCATION, Tuesday 8 August 12:30, Coleg Cymraeg stand.

The Coleg Cymraeg and the National Centre for Learning Welsh are hosting a joint event with the Minister for Welsh Language and Education, Jeremy Miles. The event will be an opportunity for part-holders working in Welsh language education to hear from the Minister about the Welsh in Education Workforce Plan, its ten-year plan for developing the Welsh language in the education workforce. There will also be an opportunity to hear more about the College and Centre projects flowing from the Scheme.

 

MENTAL HEALTH AND ME: SINGER LILY BEAU, ACTRESS HELEDD ROBERTS, AND COLEG AMBASSADORS DISCUSS YOUNG PEOPLE'S MENTAL HEALTH, Thursday, August 10, 11:00, Coleg Cymraeg stand.

This year Coleg Cymraeg ambassadors have chosen the mental health charity, Mind Cymru for the Coleg to support. . A discussion panel will be held to discuss young people's mental health and the support they need. On the panel will be some of the Coleg's ambassadors; singer, Lily Beau will share how she channels negativity to be creative; Heledd Roberts, the actress from the TV series Rownd a Rownd a former Coleg ambassador who raises awareness of young people's mental health on social media; and experts and clinicians in the field. The panelists will share their personal experiences and will have the opportunity to hear about some of the issues that concern students and young people today, what support is available, and how important it is to be able to discuss and be supported through the medium of Welsh. There will also be an opportunity to discuss the importance of ensuring Welsh-medium provision in the universities to ensure a bilingual workforce in the field.

 

ANNUAL COLEG RECEPTION, Wednesday, August 9, 16:00, Coleg stand (by invitation only)

The reception is an opportunity for friends of the Coleg from different institutions to come together to socialise, and this year five awards will be presented by the Coleg to students and lecturers who have made an outstanding contribution.  Awards to be presented include: Gwyn Thomas Memorial Award; Dr John Davies Memorial Award; Eilir Hedd Morgan Memorial Award; Norah Isaac Award; and Gwerddon Award. ANNUAL COLEG LECTURE, Tuesday, 8 August, 11:00, y Babell Lên.

The Coleg Cymraeg's annual lecture in the Babell Lên is now one of the highlights of the schedule and this year Professor Jerry Hunter will deliver the lecture, "A warm and poignant Sentence about Freedom": the anti-slavery culture of Welsh America and the Civil War.

 

WELSH IN FURTHER EDUCATION: A FOCUS ON THE HEALTH AND CARE AND SPORTS AND OUTDOOR EDUCATION FIELDS, Friday, August 11, 12:30, Grŵp Llandrillo Menai stand

Three education bodies, Qualifications Wales, Grŵp Llandrillo Menai and Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol will come together to discuss the Welsh language in further education in the company of the Minister for Education and the Welsh Language, Jeremy Miles. As part of the event there will be an opportunity to hear from learners and lecturers in the Health and Social Care areas, and Sport and Outdoor Education. It will be an opportunity to reflect on how the work in the further education sector is contributing to the creation of confident Welsh speakers and the bilingual workforce of the future.

In addition to the above highlights there will be a host of other events throughout the week in the Coleg stand including scientific and creative workshops, art sessions, and a presentation by Cardiff University students on the history of Llanfrothen village. There will be folk entertainment with TwmpDaith, and a number of live performances by various bands such as Bwncath, Tesni Hughes, Aelwyd y Waun Ddyfal, Dros Dro, Gwenu and Dadleoli.
