The Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol is seeking to commission a research project to better understand the views of Welsh speaking and bilingual black, Asian and ethnic minority (BAME) pupils, learners and apprentices of the Coleg’s various schemes to attract learners to study through the medium of Welsh and bilingually.

The Coleg is keen to increase its engagement with people from a BAME background and to encourage more of them to take advantage of Welsh medium and bilingual post-compulsory education. The individual or company appointed to undertake the work will be required to draft a report based on the research and to include recommendations as to how the Coleg can make its offer more accessible and appealing.

Dr Dafydd Trystan, the Coleg’s Registrar said:

“With an increase in the number of young people from black, Asian and other ethnic minority speaking Welsh, we are very keen to ensure that more of them have access to and receive Welsh medium or bilingual post-compulsory education. The Coleg is pleased to be taking proactive steps for the first time to ensure our offer is accessible and appealing and recognise that our engagement rates with people from these communities have so far been less than we would have liked.

“By gaining a better understanding of the attitudes of young people from these communities towards Welsh medium and bilingual further education, higher education and apprenticeships, their understanding of the increasing need for a bilingual workforce and their opinion of the Coleg’s various schemes, our aim is to put forward schemes which will ultimately lead to more people from diverse backgrounds taking advantage of Welsh medium and bilingual post-compulsory education.”
