Denise Williams, Ieuan Wyn and Dr Iolo ap Gwynn will be inaugurated as Honorary Fellows of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol at a virtual meeting of the Coleg's Annual Congregation on Tuesday 16 March 2021.
Denise Williams will be presented by Dr Gwawr Taylor, Assistant Secretary at the University of South Wales and a Member of the Coleg Cymraeg's Academic Board. Dr Taylor said: "Denise Williams has given her life to education, contributing to every single educational stage – from a child's first term in primary school to the appointment and development of some of the most experienced academics at our universities. She is awarded this fellowship in recognition of her commitment to the Welsh language in higher education and a lifetime contribution to education.”
Ieuan Wyn will be presented by Professor Mererid Hopwood, Professor of Welsh at the University of Aberystwyth and member of the Coleg Cymraeg's Academic Board. Professor Hopwood said: "Ieuan Wyn is a distinguished poet and writer, and winner of the chair at the Porthmadog National Eisteddfod in 1987. He is awarded this fellowship for his voluntary work as a campaigner and his subsequent practical commitment to furthering the mission of the Coleg Cymraeg.”
Dr Iolo ap Gwynn will be introduced by Gareth Pierce, Chair of the Coleg Cymraeg’s Board of Directors. Gareth Pierce said: “Dr Iolo ap Gwynn's contribution to the sciences through the medium of Welsh has been substantial throughout his career. After studying zoology at Aberystwyth, he was a member of staff at the Institute of Biology, Environmental and Rural Sciences at that university until his retirement in 2009, where he specialized in cell life and electron microscopy. The fellowship is awarded for his life-long contribution to teaching and promoting the sciences through the medium of Welsh.
As part of the Coleg's Annual Congregation, individuals are inaugurated as Honorary Fellows in recognition of their key contributions to Welsh-medium higher education over the years. A total of 24 individuals have been inaugurated as Fellows, including the late Dr John Davies, Dr Meredydd Evans and Professor Gwyn Thomas.
During the Congregation, there will also be an opportunity to recognise 14 students who have obtained doctorates through Coleg sponsorship.
